Let's raise a Lemon Susie to Stephens....

Friday's a big day at Stephens College, and thanks to the efforts of the Office of Academic Affairs and the Staff Advisory Council, it just got even better.

You're all invited to a Zoom gathering on Friday afternoon at 4:30 -- following our Honors Convocation and each academic program's student celebration -- for a toast to the extraordinary colleagues who were recognized at Convocation, and for an inspiring reminder at the end of another week that we are all in this together.

And because we're Stephens, we OF COURSE have a signature drink for the occasion. Called the "Lemon Susie," it was created by our very own mixologist, Dr. Mary Amanda Haskins. Dr. Haskins teaches personal health, wellness and nutrition in our Health Sciences program, and I don't know about you, but I'm feeling better just thinking about it....

Here's all you need to do: Prepare your favorite beverage. A beer will suffice, but if you're feeling a bit more daring, you can join me in figuring out how to concoct a Lemon Susie with the ingredients I have in my kitchen. Muddled mint? Ummmm....gotta pass. Crushed ice? Check: I do have a hammer. Star slices? Where's that Christmas cookie cutter? (See? If I can do this, you definitely can do this...)

Here's the recipe:

  • Muddled mint in crushed ice

  • 1 part vodka (can use a flavored option or substitute lemonade for non-alcoholic)

  • 1/2 lemon, juiced

  • A splash of grenadine

Shake ingredients and pour over ice. Top with Prosecco or sparkling rose (substitute lemon or club soda for a non-alcoholic version). Garnish with fruit in star slices. (Already referenced cookie cutter, or a pizza slicer or pairing knife will do the trick.)

Take a picture (seriously, we have to have a Lemon Susie photo gallery!).

And raise your glass to the best community we could hope to belong to -- in good times and in bad.

You should have received an email this afternoon with the info about the Zoom meeting, and they'll send it out again on Friday morning. I'd post it here, but just think of all the Lemon Susie party crashers who would show up!

See you there!

But what does that mean?

On Sunday, Stephens College issued a statement -- I issued a statement -- expressing our community's values and Ideals in response to the murder of George Floyd at the hands of the Minneapolis police
